Going to Pieces

It's all about "the quilt" right now, in my spare time, at least.  On my days off last weekend...it rained!  Big surprise for those that know me.  I have rotten luck when it comes to good weather on my days off.  That's another story for another day.  Today's story is about quilting.  Well, to be more precise, it's about cutting big pieces of fabric into small pieces of fabric so that it can be sewed into big pieces again.  That's what quilters know.  Here are some photos to give you an idea what I'm talkin' about.

First I start with six rectangles .  These colors are not true but you will notice the fabric alternates light and dark.

Next, I stack them one on top of the other and draw the pattern that I will be cutting.  You have to look closely to see where I have drawn chalk lines.
Once I have drawn the lines, I pin a number to each piece.  This allows me to sew them back together in the right order.  I didn't number the two pieces in the middle because they will be shuffled once the fabrics are cut.

Next, I cut along the lines.  Remember, there are six pieces of fabric stacked together.

Now that the pieces are cut, I shuffle the top fabric of the two middle pieces to the bottom of the stack.  Can you see what has appeared?

Ta Da!  A heart magically appears.  Then I sew each rectangle back together and every seam is a C.U.R.V.E!  I use lots of pins and I don't sew quickly soooooo, it takes me about 45 minutes for each one and there are 36 of them.  Each set of six produces a different heart because I drew the template differently each time.

Good thing etiquette allows a year after the wedding to present a gift.

The photos are a little blurry because I cropped them to bring them closer.  I'm a quilter, not a photographer.

In the Beginning

there was a beautiful young woman
 and a handsome young man
 and they became engaged

I promised them a quilt as a wedding gift.

The pattern was selected from the book titled "Stack a New Deck" by Karla Alexander
"Joker's Wild"
The first two fabrics have been purchased
There's a lot to be done but not a lot of time to do it.  Guess I better get busy!

Being thankful

I realize how lucky and blessed I am every single day.  Nightly, before falling asleep, I list at least 5 things I'm thankful for that day.  I never have trouble coming up with 5, sometimes I have trouble keeping it that short.  I'm regularly thankful for these...

*two beautiful, healthy, honest, responsible, compassionate children
*a granddaughter that makes me enjoy being a grandmother a gazillion times more than I would have thought possible
*a partner that loves me more than I deserve and treats me like the Queen I tell him I am, even though we both know that's not true ;o)
*my ability to spend the winter away from the cold and snow where I can be outside, in the sun nearly every day
*being healthy

Today I'm also very thankful that my closest friend, Su, goes home from the hospital tomorrow without requiring abdominal surgery ;o)  For her, that's a real blessing!

Since a post is boring without photos, here are a few...

I took a picture of Mr. Bill taking a picture of the eagles.

Although we have a large assortment of knives, none of them are worth a darn.  Mr. Bill, being a knife aficionado, picked out this assortment of new knives ar Marshalls.  Aren't they pretty?

Some new fabrics from Wal-mart.  Not the best quality but I'm thinking about some Valentine surprises and these are the perfect colors.

My new "bright light".  Mr. Bill gave it to me for Christmas, I packed it and brought it down here, it didn't work, I returned it, I got a new one, it works GREAT!

That's all for today, it was a quiet day...cool and cloudy with rain.  We got in some good exercise at the gym though.
