We learned a few years ago, from our oil burner technician, that the rule is "you plant pears for your heirs". Apparently it takes 15-20 years for pear trees to produce fruit. Bill planted this tree when he moved here in 1996 and it only started producing fruit a few years ago. We got a ton one year, which were delicious, but the last two years we only got a handful.
The tree is loaded with blossoms this year, we're keeping our fingers crossed for lots of pears.
